Now, you might say, “Christian, you’re married. How can you tell me about being by myself.”
Well guess what, I can and I’m about to.
Being with someone doesn’t mean you can’t also savor your alone time whether that is watching your favorite show. Alone. Eating out a restaurant. Alone. Taking a walk. Alone.
See? There are a lot of things you can do – ALONE – and with joy.
What do you love doing by yourself and with yourself?
Here are my top 5 things I love to do and how I like to enjoy them:
> LISTENING TO MUSIC
Is there not something absolutely transcendent about certain songs and sounds? You can be whisked away to your senior year of high school, first love, a distinct travel experience and so many other memories. Listening to music by myself and time traveling back feels like a damn superpower.
> WRITING LISTS
I might have a problem. I LOVE writing lists!!!!
It’s weirdly therapeutic AND stressful (say it with me in your Two Chainz voice: at the same damn time!)
I make lists of gratitude to reflect on, personal and financial goals, lists for lists that I want to make as well as lists for places I want to travel and explore, date nights, gifts and more.
My list making has me filling over 2,000 Apple Notes and now downloading Notion so I can keep it all together and see it categorized and emoji filled the way I like it.
Are you a list maker? I love me some pen and paper, what apps, if any, do you incorporate?
> WATCHING MOVIES
I love sitting on my couch with popcorn and Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate almonds mixed together. I love watching Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Thrillers and Horror. It is rare I watch drama cuz I love some action.
Before I met my husband, I liked movies but I didn’t really care either way if I watched them. Now through my Hubby’s eyes and having many clients in film, I feel like a kid watching them and looking at the graphics, why they chose the story line, where it could have possibly filmed and other places my mind likes to race to.
My favorite movie is still Devil’s Advocate with Al Pacino.
Come back for my movie lists and share what’s on yours!
> SLEEP IN HOTEL ROOMS
Some of the rooms I have stayed in have been absolutely incredible from my suite in Amsterdam, open showers in Grenada, city sights in Buenos Aires to ocean views in Jamaica but is what it translates to.
Hotel rooms mean I’m in exploration mode and for me, that is everything. I love learning something new and capturing new memories. The reality is we are here for a finite amount of time.
It is our choice to be the best human we can be, treat people the way we want to be treated and impact our communities and fellow humans.
Yes, I am more than likely, over 90% of the time traveling with someone and whether I am or without a travel partner, I ALWAYS take time to enjoy myself in the city or place alone.
> LISTEN TO PODCASTS
And finally, listening to podcasts. I was a hard core podcast listener and then I just stopped.
I have rekindled my love of podcasts and in doing that, I realized why they felt like a chore rather than enjoyment.
Wanna guess why I wasn’t enjoying podcasts????
I was only listening to ones that had to deal with my work – real estate!
You can’t be in something over 75 hours a week and then listen to it on your off time. That’s no bueno honeys.
So I started listening to Archive Atlanta sharing the history of the city, Anatomy of a Murder – funny story for another time that I will tell you about listening to an episode and then going into an empty home. Oy. You may not want that in your spirit but if you appreciate true crime stories, this is a must. How I Built This diving into entrepreneurial journeys with innovators that impacted our world and Therapy for Black Girls exploring the impact of media, relationships, answering questions and more.
You know what?! We’re going to have a podcast list next. So many to listen to and share.
Your turn! Put me on!!! What podcasts do you love??
Side note >> In a few weeks I am heading to Mexico City with just me, myself and I to fulfill a dream I have had for over 10 years – take intensive Spanish classes and increase my proficiency. This will be a challenge and I’m ready.
Ready to meet new people, explore the beautiful language of Spanish even more and to see new things.
